I refuse to accept a world in which it is not possible to support oneself by doing craft. It is a clear sign to me that something is wrong about the financial system that there are not people everywhere making cool crafted stuff by hand and supporting themselves while they fill our world with interesting artifacts. I once saw a picture of an African woman posing on the dirt floor of her hut with her life-tools, which were a variety of vessels and baskets for dealing with food. I was struck by the fact that any and all of the “humble” objects surrounding her could have been shown in a museum. Her surroundings were absolutely pure and free of slipshod plastic crap. No design magazine had convinced her that she was better off if some corporation spent $100,000 to make a plastic injection mold that would allow them to put all the potters or chair-makers out of business while convincing people they were getting “good design.” I’m talking about all that junk clogging thrift stores and garage sales when some poor consumer-wretch tries to hand off something they got at Walmart to another poor wretch and squeeze 25 cents out of the deal. Stuff that never should have been made in the first place.
I made all these little tiles by hand. I don’t think I wasted even a second of my time. Each one is different.
